8.05 broke the nvidia drivers. recent updates solved some issues with video, but compiz still doesn’t work. Compiz worked great in 7.10. Palm treo doesn’t synch in 7.10 or 8.04. Too bad i always immediately install upgrades. I should have learned to wait for a few months to shake out the problems.

i’m not too sure about the next release too. i looked at the anticipated changes and can’t see anything that will do me any good. a new kernal that doesn’t resolve old issues seems to be unneccesary.

I hope I never have to go back to windows though.

I use Ubuntu 8.04 X64 and I’m extremely pleased.
I used to have XP64 on my PC but I had little to no functionality, drivers for hardware weren’t compatible, none of my software worked. 32-bit xp wasn’t an option as I have 8Gb of ram and xp32 only recognizes 3Gb. So my only option was to look for a Linux version that is usable.
I’ve used quite a few different versions of Linux in the last few years as a dual-boot installation, but I never really saw a realistic replacement for Windows. But when I tried the live cd version of 8.04 I was converted. All my software that wouldn’t work in XP64 either works with WINE or I’ve found a Linux equivalent that’s just as good if not better.
I’ve used hardy since its release date and I’ve had no issues with stability or kernel lock ups. My other half is a video and sound engineer and whenever she was rendering video in xp the machine would crash but with hardy heron she can even run a few other programs while waiting for the video to finish.
I build computers in my spare time for who-ever wants to save a bit of cash but still want high-end performance.I have always installed xp on the machines (never vista) but the last two machines I’ve built I’ve put ubuntu x64 and ubuntu x86 and the two guys were glad to save €240 by getting a free os and also surprised at how easy to use ubuntu is and how easy it is to obtain how to guides on-line for all the stuff they want to do.
If you’re looking for a windows alternative Ubuntu is great, but if you’ve used Linux exclusively before, ubuntu probably isn’t right as it can be a little bit too much like windows.
I don’t think I’ll ever go back to windows.

I have been using ubuntu since forever. I love the OS but I must admit I have been a bit disappointed with this release. It looks great, boots a lot faster on my machine driver installation is easy, but I have had some major stability issues, from minor program freezes to kernel lock ups.

Edgy/Fiesty on my 3 machines machines (Dell D810, Dell D410 and Asus F5v) works with no issues, Hardy is un-usable on these 3 machines.

I did not have any of these issues with any of the previous releases (including alpha releases). So I have gone back to Fiesty for now and hopefully after a few months of patches these issues will be resolved.

I a old SuSE user. I looked and Ubuntu at version 6. I was not impressed. 8.04 is very nice. I would easily recommend this to a window user. The Ubuntu team has done a very good job.

I generally find ubuntu hardy heron feature complete. Although it does feel a bit bloated but with its features, I can really go around recommending it to anyone who is sick and tired with microsoft’s products.

I have been pleasantly surprised at the maturity of Ubuntu. I changed to XBuntu because I have an older system, but I’m converting shortly back to Ubuntu Multimedia that I just downloaded. I inherited a HP printer and it was instantly recognized. As far as I’m concerned I grateful as hell to be finally done with Windoze and Redmond. I came from the early days of PC, the grassroots and if you wanted software you had to write it yourself…..Praise God NO MORE REDMOND

It is foolish not to run Hardy Heron. It is one heck of a distro.Mint is based upon the same Ubuntu source and has its joys as well. Download and use these distros. Waiting is no good at all.

I download too many distros . I just wait until a Linux magazine does an issue with a couple of DVDs and use them.
